Beyond Inclusion: Knowing Curriculum and Community with a DEI Lens

Friday, 7 March 12:40-13:40

In this interactive workshop, we will explore the journey of embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into the fabric of an international school in Switzerland. Discover how ISL identified areas of need by auditing our curriculum and gathering insights from staff and students and learn about the tools and strategies that guided this process. I will share what worked well in our context, what we might do differently in the future, and share our findings. The session will also showcase our school’s strategic DEI plan, providing concrete examples of impactful events, staff training, and amplifying student voice to create a more inclusive environment. Delegates will gain actionable ideas for reviewing their own curricula through a DEI lens, with ample time for discussion and Q&A. Join me to collaborate and lay the groundwork for an SGIS DEIJ Group, fostering a network of committed educators working toward transformative inclusion.

SPEAKER

Daniel Grocott

My professional DEI journey began 16 years ago after qualifying as a geography teacher in London. My international career has given me experience on the values of teaching intercultural understanding. From an enhanced learning environment to developing critical thinking skills, I believe it is essential for equipping our young learners to play an active and responsible role in a complex, multicultural world.

At ISL, my work has focussed on auditing and developing our curriculum with a DEI lens and empowering student voice through establishing safe spaces for students to advocate for change in the community. As we continue our DEI journey in the coming years we are being guided by feedback from extensive DEI surveys from leadership, staff and most importantly, our students. I look forward to meeting you at the SGIS 2025 conference.
